Climate - Weather
United States climate
and weather cannot be described like for other
countries. From Alaska on far North, to Florida and
California, you'll find all weather and climate
conditions through the year.
United States
The country is made up of 48 contiguous states of the continental USA,
plus the huge state of Alaska, northwest of Canada, and the volcanic
islands of Hawaii, 2,000 miles (3,219km) out into the Pacific. There are
also the US territories, which include Puerto Rico, Guam, American
Samoa, the Midway Islands and US Virgin Islands. Tourism is focused
mainly in the great cities such as New York and Washington, as well as
sunshine states such as Florida, California and Hawaii. However the
mind-blowing landscapes, found in the wealth of magnificent National
Parks like Yosemite, Yellowstone and the Adirondacks, as well as
spectacular sights like the Grand Canyon and the Rocky Mountains, are
what make the USA so unique. With all this on their doorstep, it’s easy
to understand why most Americans have never bothered getting a passport.
Florida
Sunshine and blue skies are almost always a fact of life in Florida, at
any time of year. There are, however, two climatic zones – subtropical
in the south and warm temperate in the north. Summer in the south
(Orlando and below) is humid with afternoon storms; the peak season is
in the winter when temperatures are warm and there is little humidity.
Summer is the peak season north of Orlando but temperatures are usually
comfortably warm; the crowds arrive in the summer when the weather gets
hotter and more humid. The hurricane season is between June and
November.
California
In general, summers are hot, winters are mild and humidity is low.
Offshore breezes keep the beach communities of Los Angeles and San Diego
cooler in summer and warmer in winter than those further inland.
Temperatures in the summer can get well over 90°F (32°C) and smog can
become a problem. In winter temperatures get down to around 55°F (12°C)
and rain is a possibility. San Francisco, a little further north, is a
little cooler and breezier and there is regularly fog over the harbor
until about midday. Generally the weather is warm and dry in all
seasons, with 354 days of sunshine a year.
