Climate - Weather

Italy has a largely temperate climate with regional variations. In summer the Northern parts of Italy are warm with occasional rainfall, the central region is somewhat stifled by humidity and the south scorches under the dry heat. In winter conditions in Milan, Turin and Venice are dominated by cold, damp and fog and Tuscany’s winter temperatures approach freezing, temperatures in the South of the country are more favorable averaging 50-60ºF (10-20ºC). Most people visit Italy between June and August, however the best time to visit is in Spring (April-May) and Autumn (September-October) when the weather is good and the tourists are few. The sea is warm enough for swimming between June and September. Most Italians take their vacation in August and many shops and restaurants are closed during this period. The ski season runs between December and April and the best time to walk in the Alps is between June and September.

Holidays in Italy

From sumptuous food to full-bodied wines, from ancient history to spectacular scenery, Italy is a land rich in culture and class. With more than its fair share of magnificent and romantic cities as well as a beautiful landscape and variety of coastlines, one trip to Italy will hardly seem enough.

An evening out in Italy revolves around dining out, savouring the flavours and enjoying good company. Life ebbs off to a laid back and low key pace as the sun sets, and people relax in restaurants and lounge in pavement cafés and bars, enjoying a coffee or a drink. Resorts have bars dotted around, with the occasional live music and nightclub, but on the whole, the islands and Rivieras have remained free of the neon and noise that tourism can bring with it. Italy is the perfect place for romance; wander arm in arm through beautiful cities after an intimate meal.

Beaches and Sightseeing

With waters so clear you can see the seabed and unspoilt stretches of golden and white sand, you can see why Sardinia attracts sun lovers from the Italian main land. Soft golden sands line the east coast of the Lido di Jesolo, which lies between the Venetian lagoon and the open sea, a great beach for families. Sicily’s coastline combines pretty grottos and rocky alcoves, where the beaches tend to be made up of smooth sun-warmed pebbles, though there are sandy shores as well. The Neapolitan Riviera’s steeply plunging cliffs lend themselves to pebbly coves, many with exclusive bathing platforms.

Local Cuisine & Evenings Out

With Italian food popular across the globe, you may think you know all there is to know about Italian cuisine. However, spend any time in Italy and you’ll discover there’s more to their diet than pizza and pasta, though the Neapolitan Riviera is known for dishing up some of the best in the world. Lobster and bottargce, caviar made from mullet eggs, are just a few of the things Sardinia does well. You’ll have no trouble finding somewhere to eat on the Lido or Venice, no matter the time of day. For snacks and light refreshments, there are cafés and ice cream vendors – an absolute must, with an abundance of flavours. Sicilian cuisine is as unique as the island itself, bringing together European, Oriental and North African ingredients in a spicy combination. Cous cous and rice are widely used, and street stalls sell all kinds of African snacks and delicacies.

Shopping and Markets

All over Italy, towns and cities brim with shops and boutiques. Unsurprisingly for a country that is famed for its taste in clothes, there are countless designer fashions sold at exclusive prices. Street markets offer up everything from freshly picked produce to local handicrafts, glassware and leather goods.

Museums

There are countless museums and galleries throughout Italy, home to some of the world’s treasures, such as Venice’s Accademia, a museum full of masterpieces and the famous Palazzo Ducale, where you can trace Venetian history.
